With the natural beauty of Prospect Park as a backdrop, the classical grandeur of the Brooklyn Museum frames a suitable home for one of the oldest museums in the USA. Formed in 1823 in Brooklyn Heights, the Library and Lyceum of Brooklyn began to display a gallery of fine visual art in 1846. The Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Science combined those exhibits in this ambitious structure built in 1893, a testament to the pride of Brooklyn in its community. The original building plans were to place the museum at the center of a complex of cultural institutions. The Steinberg Family Sculpture Garden and the Kevorkian Gallery are just two of many wings named after Jewish supporters of the Brooklyn Museum. The left front of the outside of the building also has four symbolic statues representing Hebrew culture. “The Hebrew Lawgiver,” “The Hebrew Psalmist,” “The Hebrew Prophet,” and “The Hebrew Apostle” are matched with the names of Moses, David, Jeremiah and Isaiah cut into the stone below the frieze.
