Edit Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts
A sprawling campus spread over 16 acres, the Lincoln Center is the world’s premier center for the performing arts. Housing 12 arts organizations, including the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera House and the American School of Ballet the area was expanded to include the highly popular Jazz at Lincoln Center concert facilities. Together with the nearby Time-Warner Complex, the attractions provide an economic engine that benefits the entire Upper West Side. Once described as a “blighted area” the rundown tenements that were demolished to make way for the Lincoln Center served as the setting for Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story.” Architect Max Abramowitz designed the Avery Fisher Hall that houses the New York Philharmonic.
