Formed in 1925 when Midwood was a rural area, the East Midwood Jewish Center was formed from a union of two groups of Jewish settlers in Midwood. Dentist Jacob Schwartz hosted the meeting between leaders of the local Jewish community Max Kappell and Louis Birnhak and formed the Synagogue and Yeshiva that would serve the community. Still located in the same Renaissance Revival building, the East Midwood Jewish Center was the center of religious confirmation for “Kiki” a precocious child who became better known as Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the first Jewish female to serve as a Supreme Court Justice.
