Edit 9th Arrondissement – Lower Montmartre

Address
cadet, Paris, France, 75009
Starting Address:

Metro: Cadet Near what was once a rural village, the neighborhood of Montmarte had today grown into one of the largest Jewish communities in Paris. Settled by Jewish refugees from Eastern Europe in the 19th century, there is still a windmill and a working vineyard to the north, on the steep hills of what was the village of Montmartre. Lower Montmartre is a major business center of Paris and is also home of the Opera Garnier. Famous for its artists and bohemian culture, the Jews it attracted were no exception. Montmartre was the stomping grounds of men such as Italian Jewish artist Amedeo Modigliani in the early 1900s, whose sensual nudes made him an international celebrity, and his passionate affairs and carefree carousing made him a local celebrity as well. While its bohemian days have faded, today Montmartre’s courtyard cafes, picturesque apartment gardens and quaint little shops may still inspire and impress. Some of the most important synagogues in Paris are also in this neighborhood, including the largest and most ornate in all of France, Synagogue de la Victoire
