A recent addition to the list of Jewish museums in Australia, the Adelaide Jewish Museum was sparked by the commissioning of a work of art by the South Australia Jewish Community in 1999 entitled the “Tree of Life.” A stark piece depicting a tree whose roots are embedded deep in the globe, this remarkable piece sparked the SAJC to become curators for a museum that would house and display a collection of Jewish art online. This concept of a “virtual museum” was a radical one that has been widely accepted within the community, creating spinoff projects such as a collection of historical documents and contributions to the “Book of Life” firsthand accounts of life as a Jew in South Australia. While the Adelaide Jewish Museum does intend to house this collection in a physical structure, the innovative approach to collecting the stories of the community in a virtual fashion is drawing rave reviews.
