Opened in 1912 by William Fox, born Wilhelm Fried in Hungary, the Audobon Ballroom was the first theater in the neighborhood. Bringing the latest vaudeville shows to the “Heights” the theater also screened the first “talkies”, a favorite being “The Jazz Singer” starring Jewish showman Al Jolson. One of the rooms in the basement housed the synagogue Emez Wozedek from 1939 until 1983. The lobby entrance off Broadway bears a life-size statue of activist Malcolm X who was assassinated in this building in 1965.
