Bearbeiten 11th Arrondissement – Place de Bastille

Address
Place de Bastille, Paris, France
Starting Address:

Metro: Bastille The scene of the opening acts of the French Revolution, the Bastille prison that was stormed by the masses in 1794 was completely demolished. The area where the imposing prison once stood is now occupied by the modern Opera Bastille, although remains of one of the original towers that were found while digging a metro stop may be found at the nearby Square Henri Galli. The area around Place de Bastille is the most densely populated in Paris, and the cafes, bars, clubs and restaurants at night overflow with crowds of Parisians and tourists alike. The history of the Jewish presence in the area follows the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, when many Jews from Turkey and the Balkans came to Paris and settled in this neighborhood. A working class section of Paris at that time, the refugees were cramped and crowded, but were able re-establish themselves in their traditional roles as textile merchants and traders. The waves of Jewish immigration from Eastern Europe and North Africa expanded the Jewish community in this area in the 1970’s, although today most have opted today to live instead in the 19th arrondissement or in the suburbs of Paris.
